Today In North Dakota Political History: October 22, 1963

Andrews

Here's a little sump'n for you to chew on today:

This day in campaign history: Mark Andrews (R) won a special election in North Dakota's 1st congressional district to replace the late Rep. Hjalmar Nygaard (R), who died in July. Andrews defeated English professor John Hove, a liberal Democrat who had the endorsement of President Kennedy, proving that nothing in campaign history is too insignificant or trivial for this column (Oct. 22, 1963). Andrews would go on to win seven more House races (including a defeat of now-Sen. Byron Dorgan in 1974) and one Senate term before being narrowly defeated for re-election to the Senate in 1986.

I vaguely remember the election of 1986.  All the rest of this is prehistoric to me.

Anybody remember who beat him in the 1986 election?

I'm pretty sure it was Kent Conrad that beat him. I do remember the media here in the east was shocked over the defeat.

It was Kent Conrad and that is when he said his famous lie that he wouldnt' run for office if the budget wasn't balanced. Well guess who is still there.

Gone but not forgotten
I believe that Mark Andrews political future ended shortly after problems with him being on the board of directors at Dakota Hospital in Fargo when treatment was denied to a patient. Problem is that hospital was getting state funding and Andrews could'nt see the problem. Both of them are no longer around, I lived in Fargo at the time and everyboby there understood and Andrews disappeared with his tail between his legs!

He kept his promise
He only ran for 2 terms on his seat. Here it is summarized by Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_Conrad

During the campaign, Conrad pledged that he would not run for re-election if the Federal budget deficit had not fallen by the end of his term. By 1992 it became obvious that this would not be the case, and although polls showed that the electors would have welcomed him going back on his pledge, Conrad considered his promise binding and did not run for re-election. Dorgan won the Democratic primary election.

Conrad got an unusual opportunity to remain in the Senate when the other North Dakota senator, long-serving Dem-NPLer Quentin Burdick, died on September 8, 1992. Burdick's widow, Jocelyn Birch Burdick, was appointed to that seat temporarily, but a special election was needed to fill the rest of the term. As this was not running for re-election, Conrad ran for and secured the Democratic-NPL nomination. He won the special election and was sworn in December 14, 1992, resigning his other seat the same day. (The first seat was then filled by Dorgan, who was appointed by the governor on December 15, 1992 to fill the seat for the brief interim until he would have been sworn in under normal circumstances.)

So he did what he said he would do.

I recall
Mark Andrews was quite a popular political figure in ND. Of course, those were the days when you could still be a moderate Republican. And the line between a moderate ND Republican and a conservative ND Democrat was pretty fuzzy.

Subject Line : Beat Long Poll Lines with Absentee Ballots from StateDemocracy.org

Many state and local election officials are encouraging voters to use Absentee Ballots to avoid the long lines and delays expected at the polls on November 4th due to the record-breaking surge in newly registered voters.

Voters in most states still have time to obtain an Absentee Ballot by simply downloading an official application form available through www.StateDemocracy.org, a completely FREE public service from the nonprofit StateDemocracy Foundation.
