NDGOP Whoring Itselt Out To Insurance Industry
Written by Chet
Thursday, 04 March 2010

NDGOP Bought And Paid For Hotline is reporting the North Dakota Republican Party ("ND GOP") is affirmatively seeking out campaign funds from the insurance industry and expects to raise as much as $50,000 from insurance companies in June of this year:

Amid a flap over an embarrassing fundraising presentation, another presentation appears to show at least one state GOP is ready to reap rewards from the insurance industry, which could open the party up to charges that it is in the pocket of an industry that would be hurt by health care reform.

A photo posted to a Facebook profile of the ND GOP [reproduced at NorthDecoder.com, appropriately, to the upper-right] appears to show a recent RNC campaign school presentation. Part of that presentation included laying out the state party's fundraising goals, one of which is to hit up the insurance industry for $50K.

Under the "Major Donors" category, "Insurance Industry" is listed next to a figure of $50K. The ND GOP also appears to be planning an event in the Hamptons in June with 120 attendees.

Hotline On Call

It takes a special kind of pathological liar to go out into the world, claiming to fight for the little guy, and then go raise tens of thousands of dollars from the insurance industry.

I'd bet I know exactly where the NDGOP is planning to get this kind of insurance industry dough.

And what's with the fundraiser in the Hamptons?!?  Isn't that a fancy, expensive vacation venue in New York where all the East Coast "Who's-Who"s spend all their time?   Is that where North Dakota's Republican Party has found its base?  Guess so.

No wonder they've scheduled the coronation of a socialist banking heir as North Dakota's next U.S. Senator.

NorthDecoder.com contacted the North Dakota Republican Party seeking comment regarding this story.  The NDGOP has not yet responded.

According to opensecrets.org:
Pomeroy has over 157k from the insurance industry
Dorgan has over 81k from the insurance industry
Conrad has over 241k from the insurance industry

I guess we've discovered who the "special kind of pathological liar" are!

Thinking too small
Compared to the amount of money collected by "progressive" democrats, it appears Republicans are thinking too small.

Attacking the source of political money is a poor excuse for attacking the ideas and positions of one opponents. Its the equivalent of attacking a legal positions based on the client that makes them. For instance, Larry Flynt might be a pornographer, but his position on the First Amendment had merit.

Hey Chet, how about some debate about ideas instead of mindless inside baseball attacks ?

Your readers deserve better.

All
Here's my point, perhaps not perfectly made: I've been reading and listening as Republicans criticize others for accepting out-of-state money and/or insurance industry money for no less than six years. The ND GOP's meme is "We're the party of small, local, grassroots donors; Democrats are not. Truth is John Hoeven and Wayne Stenehjem have taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from big, out-of-state corporations (laundered through the RGA and RSLC) AND NOW we see that the state party is anticipating it'll receive $50,000 from the insurance industry IN JUNE.

Have Conrad, Dorgan and Pomeroy accepted checks from insurance company lobbyists? I suppose they have. $50,000 in one month? Maybe. But I doubt it. But, whatever they've done, they haven't been attacking themselves for it. Republicans have.

JLock... If I had more time, I'd start a blog where all we ever did was debate wonky policy issues. It'd be you and me and 3 other people reading it, and that's it. Truth is, you guys have been KILLING us for 20 or 30 years by doing what I'm doing with this blog. I waited and waited for someone else to fight fire with fire and nobody ever did. So I'm doing it. You don't like it? Start a wonky blog where people debate wonky policy stuff. I'll check in as time permits. I'll be one of the 4 or 5 people who read it.

Race to the Bottom
So its a race to the bottom? You attack them because they attacked you first? You ignore real issues because its not what the people want to read. You preclude thoughtful discussion because its just to darn hard for your readers to understand. Perfect.

The National Enquirier sells papers, doesn't make it journalism, or right.

Congratulations on being the National Enquirer for progressive North Dakotans.

I can't wait for the story about three-headed alien Republicans who were created by the insurance industry lobby to destroy government run health care.

Funny
For NorthDecoder.com to be the National Enquirer for progressive North Dakotans, there would have to be a Wall Street Journal or New York Times or Washington Post for North Dakotans, liberal or otherwise. That would suggest there is a newspaper in North Dakota that does hard investigative journalism and you know there is no such thing. You would have to agree with me there is no WSJ or NYT or WaPo in North Dakota. You and I have both seen college newspapers better than any of our state daily newspapers.

When you say "it's a race for the bottom," you make it sound like the race just started, and NorthDecoder.com is the first entrant. The reality is -- and you know this -- that we're late to the game, chief. The Fargo Forum, Bismarck Tribune, Grand Forks Herald, Minot Daily News, Williston Herald, Dickinson Press and Jamestown Sun have a huge head start. We have some serious catching up to do. And maybe we're not trying very hard to catch up. Maybe we're happy being in 10th place.

And, by the way, the National Enquirer is in the running for a Pulitzer Prize right now.

Thanks for your continued support.

Paris Hilton
If your goal is to protect Paris Hilton from the estate tax, you need to fund raise in the Hamptons, because that is where your base is.

True. But this blog sure as hell is a lot closer to the National Enquirer than the NYT or Washington post. Imagine a bit of 3rd grade journalism with slander mixed in. Useless, weak blog.

What're they afraid of?
You know what this exchange is all about, Marty? These guys are afraid (or they know) there's a story out there -- or more than one -- that's just waiting to be published that will be the North Dakota equivalent of the John Edwards scandal first published in the National Enquirer. It'll never be nominated for a Pulitzer, but it'll be a big deal here in NoDak. And these guys are all smart enough to know the story will never print in the Fargo Forum, Grand Forks Herald, Bismarck Tribune or other N.D. daily newspaper until after it's published here.

Like Neidermeyer here, they can't help but read NorthDecoder.com. They know we're going to rain on the big, anticipated Republican parade. It's just a question of whose parade, and when we'll decide to rain on it.

They all love to hate NorthDecoder.com.

Can't remember who said this, maybe I even read it here. Got enemies? Good. That's means you took a stand on something.
