Equal Time For Jasper Schneider
Written by Chet
Monday, 18 August 2008

You'll recall how all of North Dakota's radio and TV stations are voluntarily giving equal time to North Dakota Insurance Commissioner candidate Jasper Schneider because his opponent used federal money to pay for a political campaign commercial dressed up as a Public Service Announcement?  Well Jasper Schneider has his response ad put together and going out onto the airwaves this week.  Here's a sneak peak:

I think it's a pretty good ad, but it's still troubling that Hamm was allowed to use tax money to fund his ad while Jasper's ad presumably had to be paid for with political campaign money.  Maybe there will be accountability for a North Dakota Republican this one time.

Doubt it.

Jasper also is in the news today.  He is calling for a state disaster relief fund.  Seems like a good idea.

Do I understand this right----the stations are voluntarily giving him equal time?
Does that mean that whomever is the regulator is not making the determination as to whether or not Hamm's ad is a political ad? If so it would seem that Hamm is off the hook and the taxpayers will foot the bill. That really stinks. I just don't understand the lack of backbone. We all know that it was a political ad----some may choose to deny it but it is nothing but political ad. If the roles were reversed, I would still be outraged and demand the money be paid back to the taxpayers. This whole bunch is empowered by our lack of resolve. You can rest assured that some of the voters get it. Do you think that voter apathy exists without reason?

Our state of affairs in the State of ND cries out for an independent documentary. The issues are just too vast and too complicated for the average voter to get. Look at the volumes of information Chet has posted over the past couple years. And that is just scratching the surface. Individual voters would have to be very motivated to plod through all the data, let alone understand it. It would take a genius and master storyteller to boil it all down.

No one is really investigating. Those of us who care are left swirling in the vacuum. The best campaign for Dems would have been beating the bushes to find a venue to tell the story, in a credible way. It's too late for that now. And maybe wasn't even possible...perhaps that's the lack of resolve you're talking about, Big Jake. Resolve aside, those who have pushed the issue have been made an example of, so who can blame anyone for looking the other way?

I agree that Hamm should return the money from his campaign. Even though Schneider is getting 'equal' time, its not really equal as he has to pay for it through his donations where Hamm can us taxpayers money.

The ad looks great! Nice job Jasper. I'll be donating again to help keep the ad on the air.
