Today is an awful day for North Dakota's Dickinson State University. It's disclosed in a university system audit report that DSU is little more than a diploma mill for foreign students, and a 59 year old school official (apparently) takes his life. Sad day. Here is the actual audit report, for anybody who's got time and interest... Dsu Internal Review Final Draft

... A truly sad unfortunate day. Our sympathies to this man's family. After the appropriate time passes, we need to demand answers. This will not likely end at the Administration building in Dickinson. Nor will it likely end at the Board of Higher Ed. I am sure that the wagons are already circling and the Gov. is inside the circle. Just maybe if whomever was doing their job and this was taken care of a long time ago, a family might not be in mourning tonight. Accountability is one of the costs of democracy. In its absence, our whole system is diminished. We must do better. |

dsu has little credibility.... In listening to certain students we are hearing from the basic curriculum has been "dumbed down" to the point of rediculousness due to the language barrier etc of international students etc...Achieving a degree of any sort at dsu seems to be an incredibly easy thing to do. Accredidation has always been an issue and now with these kind of internal findings that just scratch the surface I would say any degree in the last 8-10 years should be suspect. Our daughter, at one time, had thought about transferring here from her alma mater but it was cost prohibitive & she was getting 10x the education in Montana where we raised her. She went on to achieve her Masters after two BAs & we are very happy with the choices she made to stay put n continue her studies! I hope these issues at dsu can be remedied but Im thinking the bottom of the pot has yet to be dredged... Republican are gonna still bang their drum about progress... still not seeing any... pathetic ! |

Reply to Jake I agree...especially with this comment: Accountability is one of the costs of democracy. In its absence, our whole system is diminished. We must do better. The problem is the SBHE is NOT accountable. If we disagree there is nothing that can be done. My understanding, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is that the chancellors are put in by the current elected governor and that they do not report to him or the legislature. And it's built into our state constitution this way. It created a 4th wing of government that actually has not oversight. |
