Things to read, watch and/or listen to... * John Hoeven and Rick Berg both vote to kill United Tribes Technical College and the Minot Bypass project. (Source) Nobody should be surprised when Hoeven and Berg vote for big tax breaks for their fellow multimillionaire friends out of one side of their mouth while voting to kill legislation that would help middle class folks and minorities and that would create jobs out the other. Typical Republican move. * Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy * Utah criminalizes miscarriage. (Click here) * Under- or un-equipped crews continued to battle an oil well fire in northwestern North Dakota yesterday. (Click here) (or here) I'm not sure whether this is the second or third oilfield fire in the last six months. The guy in charge of monitoring these wells said this not long ago: "It's a fire drill every day," Lynn Helms, director of the state Department of Mineral Resources, said in an interview with the AP. "We need more properly trained enforcement people helping the industry stay on track." How true. You have to wonder if ANYBODY in state or local government has questioned the Hoeven or Dalrymple administrations about the lack of adequate infrastructure. You'd think somebody would be the responsible grown-up about this stuff. * The state pension fund crisis isn't a crisis after all. (Click here) See, also, our blog post from earlier today. * The University of Minnesota engages in the single most useless exercise I've seen in years: an analysis of the portraits of state governors. Typical Minnesota Gopher move. For those keeping score at home, Jack Dalrymple wears a North Dakota pin in his photo, but there's no flag. Why does Jack Dalrymple hate America? *

oil well fire I'm puzzled. The radio reports say that fracking fluid was ignited by an overheated truck. But then the regulators say there is no danger from the leaking fracking fluid, because it's just water and sand. Wow, I've never seen water and sand burn. And how can the Health Department say there is no danger from fracking fluid -- the DOH doesn't know what's in it. |
