I Laugh At Congressman Rick Berg Today PDF Print E-mail

The long and bipartisan list of North Dakotans who are sickened by Congressman Rick Berg's abuse of the franking privilege keeps getting longer.  Today there's a story in the For'em Comm papers about a joint press release issued by the other candidates for North Dakota's open senate seat...

Republican Rep. Rick Berg’s shared opponents in the 2012 U.S. Senate race are accusing the freshman representative of wasting taxpayer dollars on “slick campaign-style” mailers to North Dakota residents.

Berg’s three announced opponents in the Senate race, Republican Duane Sand and Democrats Heidi Heitkamp and Tom Potter, issued a joint news release Monday calling on him to account for the four documents sent to North Dakotans in recent weeks and to disclose how much money he has spent.

Fargo For'em

But here's the part that made me spit my double mocha, half-caf, haf-decaf, non-fat, no-whip out all over my monitors...

“Rick is incredibly committed to communicating with North Dakotans, the people he represents,” [Alee Lockman, Berg's lapdog] said. “He strongly believes in order to represent the people of North Dakota and its interests, it’s vital that he’s actually communicating with them.”

Fargo For'em

Seriously, Alee?!?

I wrote a letter to your boss, Congressman Berg, about three weeks ago, on October 20th.  I wrote the letter after receiving the second (of four) taxpayer-funded campaign mailers from Berg. In my letter I ask Congressman Berg to please share with me information about the campaign mailers I'd paid for. I asked, fairly specifically, for information about how much the mailers cost to produce, how much they cost to mail and information about his office's communications with the U.S. House Franking Commission. I also wanted to know how many people were sent the taxpayer funded mailers.

It's now 25 days since I personally walked in and hand delivered it to your Bismarck office.  You have not responded.

But that's not why I'm laughing.  Wanna know why I'm laughing?

Check out this photo I took of Rick Berg's most recent mailer...

Town of Sherborn

Do you recognize that couple?

I didn't either. I'm pretty sure they're not from Mott or Ray or Wilton or even Fargo. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're not from North Dakota.  Know who they are? They're apparently a couple from the Town of Sherborn, Massachusetts.  Click here.  Or maybe, like Rick Berg, they're just pretenders who get paid by a big corporation to pretend to represent something.

Then, if you flip over Berg's mailer, you'll see this photo:

How about that couple?  Do you recognize them?  Are they from Mandan?  Maybe Grand Forks?  Aneta?  Regent?

Yeah.  I don't think so. Turns out they live in an assisted living home in Puyallup, Washington, called "Meridian Hills Assisted Living."  (Click here.)  Or, again, they might be fakes, like Berg.

Ya gotta ask yourself why nobody from North Dakota wants to appear on Berg's taxpayer-funded campaign literature.

Or maybe you don't.  Maybe it's obvious.

All I can say is "well I never,,,,,,,,,once believed that Slumlord Berg ever had my interests in mind. Come to think of it, when people like him refer to their constituents, does that mean it is only people that voted for him. Having been born, raised, and lived here for,,,,,lets say,,,, not gonna give you my age, but rather a long time, does that make me less of a constituent. His only values are that of "ONLY" those that voted for him. I think he needs to represent everyone. Sad as it is to say, I think this butt-head can actually pull off another win, even though the majority of people despise him. When it comes down to it, they will vote for the party designation behind the name. I am all for having that removed from all ballots. Make everyone go out and earn the votes.

The people in those images are not pretenders or fakers being paid by big corporations. Those photos were most likely purchased from a stock photography website. Therefore the royalties can be purchased by multiple users and can appear in more than one place. I found the first picture by searching the terms "seniors" and "consulting".

I love how these mailers are structured so you can give 'feedback'. "Which of these is your main concern for Rick Berg to tackle in Washington? A. Repeal Obamacare B. Reign in the government C. A Balanced budget amendment D. Do away with unnecessary regulations E. Other___"

They should have just wrote "Which of these Republican Talking points do you want me to work on first, because I'm not going to be doing anything Democrat-ish, so don't even ask"

I also noticed, on one at least, that you had to use your own postage to send the response back. A small thing, but it seemed pretty lame. Anyone who opposes Berg isn't going to sacrifice a stamp just to have their card end up in his garbage can. The only ones who'll send it back are probably the ones who support him anyway. Seems like a pretty shady way to 'reach out to the constituants' and get their opinions. At least the opinions that agree with Berg, that is.

Well I never
Over three weeks and he hasn't contacted you at all? A real congressman would fire his entire staff if he learned they left a hand-delivered constituent letter unanswered for over three weeks.

I found the other photo on istockphotos. http://www.istockphoto.com/sto...st=436110e

These mailers look pretty professional and Washington DC fancy with out-of-state models, but you're right they would be more meaningful if they could find locals who agree with Berg's vote to kill medicare to appear in the mailers we pay for.

Medicare, huh? Isn't that where the Government gets in between you and your doctor? I thought Berg's wife was opposed to that.

I have asked the Congressman for information and specifically requested a response but, never have gotten an answer. I was asking where he was on the issue of Community Block Development Grants for Bismarck and Minot. I am wondering if he even knows what those are.

a far cry from Dorgan or Pomeroy
I would always, always receive a written reply from my senators when I wrote them regarding an issue. With Pomeroy, I could generally expect a reply and at one point was given his direct contact information if I ever needed his heeelp on something related to constituent services.

Berg has grown even more pathetic. I thought this would happen. What he is doing and I presume he has handlers who assist with this image creation, works. That is why he and a host of other Rush types keep doing it. It seems to work really well here and in places like Iowa.

As to why it works, your guess is as good as mine. Certainly, it is made much easier absent an strong or even a weak response from the "other side".

It promotes the suspension of thinking and replacing it with emotions. 1930's Germany comes to mind. That did not turn out well.

It is time to stop being ashamed that this has happened and start to formulate a plan to change our course.

In addition to the blatant push poll questions: What I like, is when you return the poll, you fold it and send it back, with your name and address on the reply. In other words, what better way for Berg to get a list of the angry and fearful faithful.
